Creation of the New York Family Business Center (NYFBC)
In 2007 Thomas P. Donahue of Donahue Financial Management Group approached Paul Muoio of Benefit Specialists of NY a Subsidiary of the Greater Syracuse Chamber of Commerce to discuss opening a family business center in Central New York housed at the Chamber. These discussions lasted for over a year. In July of 2008 Carol Hill at the Greater Syracuse Chamber of Commerce arranged the first event at the South Side Innovation Center with Bill Byrne of Byrne Dairy and several other speakers discussing best and worse practices for the longevity of a family business. This event was so successful the decision was made to forge ahead and begin to form the New York Family Business Center. Carol secured money from a Kaufman Grant out of Syracuse University and another grant from Onondaga County Industrial Development Agency to begin creating the Center. Meanwhile Donahue Financial Management Group and Benefit Specialists of NY subsidized payroll for research and implementation of a best practice model for a family business center for several months.
A board of directors was selected and a not for profit corporation was formed in March of 2009. Tom and Paul named Donna Herlihy the director of the center and together they acquired sponsorships and memberships and hired speakers to begin a regular schedule of programs and roundtables.
2013 brought big changes and exciting opportunities to the New York Family Business Center. We moved our offices and formed a partnership with the Madden School of Business at Le Moyne College. We will still continue to bring you unique and progressive family buisness programming. However now we have the opportunity to add and offer more programming, upgrade our roundtable experiences and explore new opportunities all with the help of a great local college.
