Communication and Managing Conflict in a Family Business

This interactive workshop helps individuals understand their own conflict styles and the preferences of those around them, and how their styles change depending on their conflict partner.

Come away with:

  • strategies for understanding and managing conflict,
  • how to approac:h issues with different individuals effectively.
  • Develop useful communication tools and new techniques for building better, more effective working relationships, with family and non-family members.

Communication and conflict resolution are always hot topics in a family business.  Conflict is good, and conflict is healthy if managed effectively!  We all manage conflict differently – some get geared up for the fight, and some get physically sick at the thought of any type of rift, while others want everyone to be friends. Understanding how each of us manages conflict, in different situations, with different people is the first step to handling conflict successfully. Effective conflict management builds trust within the family and employees, increasing creative problem solving and productivity.

Deb Houden, Ph.D., Director of Wisconsin School of Business Family Business Center and helps family businesses by providing resources, tools and knowledge that are needed to navigate their specific issues.

Deb earned her bachelor, masters, and doctorate degrees from the University of Wisconsin, specializing in communication, conflict resolution, and perceptions of fairness.  Her specialization led to family business consulting with Dean Fowler Associates.  She is an active member in the Association for Conflict Resolution.
